Henry Daniel Thielcke (also know as Henry Thielke, H D Thielcke, or Henry Thielche or Thieleke, H. K. D) (1788-1874), who was born in England and moved to Canada around 1831. This portrait was painted after he moved to Canada and seems to be the earliest known painting by him from his time in Canada. For the 1851 census he lived in Quebec City. He left Quebec City in 1854 and is listed in the Chicago directory of 1855.

His father was Johann Daniel Thielcke and his mother was named Anna Elizabeth. We thought at first that she was from high class German descent but Peter Sabor of McGill University has stated that she was British. Here is what he sent me:

«I’m appending here my note on Mrs Thielcke in its current state. I’m pretty sure that she was _not_ the aristocratic German Anna Elizabeth, who would surely not have married a rather lowly Court groom, as Johann Daniel Thielcke seems to have been.

Mrs Papendieck, whom I cite here, is the source for the idea that Mrs Thielcke previously worked for Princess Augusta (d. 1772). If that is correct, she must have been born not much later than 1750, so she might well have been several years older than her husband. She would have had three children in her 30s, and Henry Daniel might have been the last; perhaps after him her childbearing days were over. But this is just guesswork, of course; I still hope to find her dates through the Royal Archives at Windsor.

Mrs Thielcke turns up repeatedly in Fanny Burney’s Court journals, but always just passing references to her, such as “Mrs Thielcke was present.” Never any interesting details. But there is a bit more on her in Mrs Papendiek’s gossipy journal, including an interesting story about her devotion to Queen Charlotte.

[1] Anne Pascal, the Queen’s wardrobe woman, m. c.1780 Johann Daniel Frederick Thielcke (1760-1830). She had served as dresser to Princess Augusta, mother of George III, until Augusta’s death in 1772. This service, according to Mrs Papendiek, made her disliked by the Queen, who considered her ‘as a spy upon her actions’ (Court and Private Life in the Time of Queen Charlotte: being the Journals of Mrs. Papendiek, ed. Mrs Vernon Delves Broughton (London: Bentley, 1887), I, 10).

She was at a lower level of employment than FB and received only £30 per annum, compared to FB’s £200 and Mrs Schwellenberg’s £137. She was responsible for more menial and intimate tasks, including assisting the Queen with her undergarments and corset. She had a daughter and two sons, one of whom, Henry Daniel Thielcke (1788-1874), became a portrait and history painter and engraver who painted many portraits of the royal family; see Ross Fox, ‘Henry D. Henry Daniel Thielcke moved from Canada to the United States, as he can be found living in New York City in 1842 and in Chicago (1855-1874) in the 1870 census with his wife, Rebecca H, son Henry R (born in Canada in 1832), son Charles MacKay Thielcke and daughter Mary E (born in Scotland in 1827).

In 1870, he is then aged 82, gives his occupation as retired printer, and states assets of $12,000. By the 1880 census he has died (death in November 1874), with his wife still living with her son (Charles Mackay Thielcke) and daughter (Mary E). Another kid, A F Thielcke, is also listed in the 1851 Census of Canada East.

In the Quebec City archives (http://simmons.b2b2c.ca/tnames.html), we also find references to Thielcke, Henry Richard, Thielcke, Rebecca H; and Thieleke, Elizabeth.

It is not known if Thielcke painted any portraits while living in the United States, but it seems he painted at least one while in Chicago. A rare Chicago portrait by Thielcke, signed and dated 1855, was auctioned by Sotheby's, London, 27 September 1978 (lot 53).

Il s’agit d’un don de Louis Carrier.

This miniature portrait of an unknown sitter is clearly signed "Hy D Thielcke 1834" for Henry Daniel Thielcke (Henry Thielke, Henry Thielche) (16 Nov 1788-1874).

He was born in England and is believed to have moved to Canada around 1830, as his daughter Mary Elizabeth Thielcke was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on 12 Jan 1827 and his son Henry Richard Thielcke was born in Canada in 1832.

Henry Thielcke was born in Westminster, London, England on 16 November, 1788 the son of Johann Daniel Frederick Thielcke and Anna Elizabeth. Johann Thielcke of Queen's House was a member of the United Company of Merchants of England, who were trading to the East Indies in 1815.

Henry had an elder brother, Frederick Thielcke who was christened at Westminster in London on 16 Feb 1783 and was married in London on 7 Mar 1812 to Mary Esther Smith. He was also a merchant and his company was named Fred Thielcke and Co. In 1818 there is a reference to Fred Thielcke & Co of London, supplying an anchor to a Captain Swann.

Frederick and Mary Thielcke had a daughter Elizabeth Thielcke who was born in Southwark, London on 25 Feb 1813 and died in 1879. They lived in Ryan House Twickenham, see The Twickenham Museum : Ryan House Their daughter Elizabeth married Wadsworth Dawson Busk (c1804-1873) on 11 Oct 1834 at the British Chaplaincy, Saint Petersburg, Russia. They had a son Wadsworth Busk born in Russia on 19 Dec 1835.

Wadsworth and Elizabeth Thielcke Busk also had a daughter Mary Martha Busk, who married a William Lidderdale who had joined the Russia merchants Heath and Co, headed by one of his guardians, although nothing is known of his time with them. Lidderdale eventually joined Rathbone Bros, the long established Liverpool merchant house, in whose New York agency he worked from 1857 to 1863. In 1864 he became a partner in Rathbones and was responsible for establishing their London House.

In 1870 William Lidderdale became a director at the Bank of England, of which he was made Deputy Governor in 1887 and was Governor from 1889 to 1892 (being the first Governor to have his period at office extended to a third year). The crowning event of his life was his bold and effective handling of the Baring Crisis in 1890, following which (after refusing a baronetcy) he was appointed to Her Majesty's Privy Council and given the freedom of the City of London on May 6, 1891. A good account of this crisis is given by Sir John Clapham in his Official History of the Bank of England, Volume II beginning on page 326. Accounts of his career are to be found in the D.N.B. and, more informatively, in the Dictionary of Business Biography, published by the London School of Economics in 1985. In the last ten years of his life, William Lidderdale suffered severe financial losses, possibly connected with the affairs of Rathbones, of whom he remained a partner until 1897.

Thus the Thielcke family was well connected. However, back to Henry Thielcke who entered the Royal Academy Schools on 4 Jan 1806 aged 17 and obtained a silver medal in 1807. He exhibited at the RA and BI 1805-1816, painted historical subjects, portraits, miniatures, and executed engravings.

A miniature of HRH Princess Charlotte Augusta of Wales (1796-1817) signed and dated 1818 by H D Thielcke was lent to the exhibition at the South Kensington Museum in 1865 by HRH the Duke of Cambridge. This must either have been taken from an earlier portrait or finished after the Princess's death.

His address from 1805-1813 was Queen's House and from 1814-1816, 21 King Street, Covent Gardens. His sitters included Rev Mr Kuper, Chaplain to his Majesty; exhibited in 1807.

The fact that he painted members of the Royal Household at such an early age is perhaps explained by a reference in the diary of Lady Charlotte Bury (1775-1861) who made mention of the name Thielche in connection with a woman of the bed-chamber to Queen Charlotte and a groom of the bed-chamber to George III, having a son who painted miniatures.

It therefore seems likely his parents had emigrated to England from Germany. Variations on the name Thielcke being quite common in Prussia.

About 2 Feb 1820 Henry Daniel Thielcke married Rebecca Piercy (1801->1880) at Hitcham, Bucks, England. His place of living after that is not clear, but his daughter Mary was born in Scotland and so it is likely he lived there until he emigrated to Canada.

It appears his miniature painting was only a sideline as there is an 1828 reference to him in Edinburgh as "Clerk of the Securities" for the Board of Excise, see The Edinburgh Almanack, Or Universal Scots and Imperial Register, ... - Google Books Result

The British NPG has only one item by him, the engraving shown here.

It is an engraving of Charlotte Sophia of Mecklenburg-Strelitz by Henry D. Thielcke, published by Colnaghi, after Henry Edridge stipple engraving, published 2 December 1818 - 10 1/8 in. x 8 1/4 in. (258 mm x 210 mm) plate size; 13 1/8 in. x 11 1/8 in. (333 mm x 284 mm) paper size - Bequeathed by Frederick Leverton Harris, 1927.

The miniature portrait above was painted after he moved to Canada and seems to be the earliest known painting by him from his time in Canada, although another 1834 example has recently emerged in May 2008, see below.

For the 1851 census Henry Thielcke lived in Quebec City, where he was the French, German, and drawing master at Quebec High School. Thielcke then seems to have moved from Canada to the United States, as he can be found living in Chicago in the 1870 census with his wife, Rebecca, son Henry R (born in Canada in 1832), and daughter Mary E (born in Scotland in 1827). He is then aged 82, gives his occupation as retired printer, and states assets of $12,000.

THIELCKE, HENRY D. also worked in New York City in 1842; and in Chicago from 1855.
He exhibited at the National Academy, 1842.

By the 1880 census he had died, but with his wife still living in Chicago with her son and daughter, and at this time, the younger Henry Thielcke gave his occupation as "real estate". However the census records seem to have the wrong place of birth for Rebecca and Mary, as they refer to Canada.

It is not known if Henry Thielcke painted any portraits while living in the United States.

More recently still, this large oil portrait by Thielcke was sold on eBay in May 2008 for USD 1800. The painting measured 24.50" X 29.50" and was in a heavily ornate frame measuring approximately 33" X 38".

It is signed and dated 1834, the same year as the miniature, but is additionally inscribed "Quebec".

The same 1834 date is further proof, the miniature was also painted in Quebec, Canada.

The sitter in the miniature shown at the top is unknown.

She may be related to the lady in the oil, as the two sitters look fairly similar to one another, they both date to 1834, and are both wearing quite similar drop earrings.

However, that both sitters are wearing similar drop earrings may just be because they were fashionable at the time. 347

He died in 1874 in Chicago and NOT in 1878.

I am working on a book about Thielcke so if you have any info on him' contact me via: www.patwhite.com

I am looking on info about his life between 1820 and 1831. We don't know what he did or where he lived during those years.

Thank you for the corrections. It has prompted me to expand the entry from other information I had been meaning to add to the entry.

He must have spent part of the time you are interested in between 1820 and 1831 living in Scotland, as his daughter was christened in Edinburgh on 12 Jan 1827.

The man pictured in the center of this 1841 painting is Robert Symes, an Englishman who was attorney, judge (juge de la paix) and first ever chief of the Quebec City police (1838-1841). At some point before, he was deputy chief of the Quebec City police. He was a very tough police chief and was known to despise French Canadians. Symes was also treasurer of the Quebec City Literary And Historical Society in the 1850s.

Robert Symes était donc un cioyen de Québec d'origine britannique qui s'était démarqué en 1834 pour avoir aidé les victimes de l'épidémie de choléra à Québec. Il a aussi été magistrat (juge de la paix) dans le district de Québec, chef de police adjoint de la Ville de Québec et aussi, il a été le premier chef de police de la Ville de Québec.

His full Huron title was Robert Symes Esquire Hotwatsi. Hotwatsi means hot whiskey in the Huron language.

He was elected honorary chief of the Huron Indian tribe in Loretteville, a village located 20 km north of Quebec City. It still exists today and the Huron village (Village huron) is now called Wendake.

The painting thus shows the nomination of honorary Huron chief Robert Symes on February 21, 1838. He was made honorary chief by the elite of the Huron chiefs and warriors.

Behind the men, you see the falls of the Huron village, which also still exists today.

Le héros de cette fête, outre de nombreuses largesses, fit faire par un peintre anglais, Henry D. Thielcke, un
tableau commémoratif de cette solennité. Comme ce tableau représente un groupe caractéristique de la nation
huronne, avec l'élite de ses chefs et guerriers à cette époque, on trouvera au chapitre suivant les noms des
personnages qui y figurent. Le nouveau chef blanc fit faire une reproduction en gravure coloriée du tableau, et
chacun des intéressés en reçut un exemplaire.

La liste des personnages inclus dans la peinture, selon la Revue canadienne:

Un tableau dessiné par un artiste étranger, Henry D. Thielcke, et reproduit à quelques rares exemplaires par la lithographie, représente un groupe caractéristique des Hurons de Lorette en 1839-40. Ce tableau est dû à la magnificence d'un citoyen de Québec, d'origine anglaise, Robert Symes, qui le fit faire à l'occasion de son installation comme chef honoraire de la tribu.

Une notice de l'époque, traduite de l'anglais, fera connaître aux lecteurs les divers personnages du tableau.

«Commençant à la droite du tableau, dit la notice, la première figure (lue l'oeil rencontre est celle d'une sauvagesse, dont le nom indigène signifie ' celle qui agite les eaux.' La tête en demi-teinte dans l'arrière-plan est celle de Paul Zacharie Hôtesse (Otis), dont le nom huron veut dire ' celui qui passe au-dessus des faîtes des maisons.' Son grade est celui de chef des guerriers de la compagnie des Tortues ; il est fils d'un chef du conseil, et agit comme interprête de la langue iroquoise. Puis le regard tombe
sur le portrait en pied du grand chef Nicolas Vincent TsaSenhohi, 'le Vautour.' Son oncle (José Vincent) fut grand chef jusqu'à sa mort, après quoi le neveu succéda à son titre par l'élection des Six Nations qui seules peuvent
accéder cette haute distinction. Les chefs de conseil sont élus par les conseillers de la tribu qui en possèdent le
droit par inhérence, et les guerriers choisissent parmi ceux de leur compagnie le chef des guerriers, qu'ils présentent à la sanction et approbation du conseil. Le grand chef appartient à la compagnie des Chevreuils.

«Puis vient un jeune chef de guerriers. Il s'appelle François-Xavier Picard Tahourenché, c'est-à-dire «l'aube du matin.» Il est de la compagnie des Loups. En avant de lui se tient André Romain Tsohahisen, ' celui qui est près du chemin.' Il est premier chef du conseil et appartient à la compagnie des Chevreuils.

La tête en arrière de la figure centrale, immédiatement à gauche d'André Romain, est celle de Paul Picard. Il est fort respecté de
tous ceux qui le connaissent. Son nom sauvage est OhdaSanonk, ' il a la rivière dans la bouche.' Il est marié à la sœur du grand chef et son père était chef du conseil. Il est de la compagnie du Chevreuils. Stanislas Kostka, second chef du conseil, vient ensuite. Son nom, Ahrathenha, signifie ' celui qui gravit promptement une éminence.' Son père fut grand chef; il appartient à la compagnie des Ours; c'est le médecin de la tribu.

"Le jeune indien coiffé d'un couvre-chef de sa propre manufacture figure dans le tableau comme type du sauvage Huron dont la lignée n'a subi aucune alliance avec les blancs. L'artiste y tenait comme souvenir historique de la race. Le nom de ce personnage est Zacharie Vincent Tehariolin, ce qui veut dire «non-divisé» ou «sans mélange»; il est de la compagnie des Tortues.

Le portrait en pied qui vient ensuite est celui de Michel Sioui. Son nom indien, Theachiendalé, signifie ' celui qui a deux noms.' Il est le
troisième chef du conseil et appartient à la compagnie des Tortues. On le représente introduisant un jeune indien à qui il désigne, comme modèle propre à exciter son émulation, un chef nouvellement élu. La figure placée immédiatement à la gauche de Michel Sioui est celle de Laurent Picard, qui porte, en langue sauvage, le nom expressif de Atedjaka, c'est-à-dire ' guerrier parfait.' Il est de la
compagnie des Chevreuils, et, comme son frère Paul Picard, est fils d'un chef du conseil. Devant lui se tient Christine Vincent, fille du grand chef, appelée en huron Athianonk, ' celle qui prend soin de la source d'eau.' Elle est de la compagnie des Loups. Françoise Bastien, veuve de Basile Picard et veuve de Laurent Picard, n'a pas de nom sauvage, mais appartient à la compagnie des Che-
vreuils. Elle se penche en avant pour attirer l'attention de son enfant sur la figure principale du tableau. L'ex- pression du visage de la petite Marguerite dénote à «la fois la surprise et la timidité.»

occurs in the finding-aid to our MS Hyde 76, an extra-illustrated copy of
Boswell's Life of Johnson : including Boswell's Journal of a tour to the
Hebrides and Johnson and Johnson's Diary of a journey into North Wales,
edited by George Birkbeck Hill, compiled and bound by collector Robert
Borthwick Adam.

This set was compiled by collector Robert Borthwick Adam (1833-1904) of
Buffalo, N.Y., in the years following the book's publication in 1887. It
was inherited in 1904 by his nephew and adopted son R.B. (Robert
Borthwick) Adam (1863-1940), who may have expanded it into its present
form, and commissioned the present bindings from the Club Bindery.
Bookplates show that in 1910, R.B. Adam presented the set to his wife Lena
Stevens Adam (d. 1940). The set was purchased from the Adam estate by
Donald Frizell Hyde and Mary Hyde in 1948, bequeathed to Harvard 2003.

The set includes prints and manuscripts for many of the people and places
mentioned in Hill's Boswell's Life of Johnson, including individuals
mentioned only in footnotes or as historical figures, who may have only a
tangential relation to Samuel Johnson.

The Adams acquired prints and manuscripts to illustrate places and
individuals mentioned in the text of Hill's book. Items are mounted on
pages facing the appropriate text (preceding odd-numbered pages and
following even-numbered pages). The inventory is arranged as items appear
in the volumes.

"Madame William-Burns Lindsay et son fils John."

Madame William Burns Lindsay, nom de fille MARIA JONES et sur son fils JOHN. Le mari de Maria Jones, (elle était la fille de Robert Jones " Esqr Member of the Provincial Parliament of Lower Canada for the Borough of William Henry (aujourd'hui Sorel)), William-Burns Lindsay, dit "the Elder", né à Québec le 11 juin 1796 avait épousé Maria Jones le 13 février 1819, Anglican Cathedral of Quebec. Il était le fils de William-Robert Lindsay dit Jr (article dans le DBC) et de Mary Ann Melvin. Il succéda à son père en tant que greffier de la Chambre d'Assemblée du Bas-Canada. Puis, le fils de celui-ci, portant les mêmes prénoms que son père lui succéda et devint le premier greffier du Parlement à Ottawa en 1867.

Voici quelques renseignements complémentaires sur le jeune John Lindsay qui apparaît dans le tableau de Thielcke sur les genoux de sa mère. Il est âgé de deux ans lorsque le peintre immortalise la mère et l'enfant:

Voici quelques compléments d'information sur les deux personnages du tableau:

Thielcke a peint ce portrait en 1836. John était né le 17 février 1834 et fut baptisé le 4 juillet 1834. (Anglican Cathedral of Quebec, p. 36 de 102 pages, feuillet 36.) En 1836, il avait donc deux ans. Vous avez déjà entre les mains son acte de décès à l'âge de 45 ans, à Mattawa en Ontario, le 28 septembre 1880. Il fut inhumé à Québec le 1er octobre 1880 (Anglican Cathedral, p. 17 de 23 pages.)

Pour ce qui est de Madame William-Burns Lindsay. Je vous ai envoyé les renseignements les plus importants la concernant. Une seule ombre au tableau : nous ne connaissons pas le nom de sa mère. Sur le site de l'Assemblée nationale, on dit que Robert Jones (le père de Maria) fut marié, sans que l'on cite le nom de son épouse. Bizarrement, dans l'acte du mariage (13 février 1819), le nom de la mère n'apparaît pas non plus.

Une internaute, GLORIA BEEK, apparenté à la famille Lindsay, m'a écrit que Maria Jones était une fille naturelle de Robert Jones. Mais je n'ai aucune preuve de cela.

Comment les routes du peintre Thielcke et de William-Burns Lindsay ont-elles pu se croiser ? Tous deux vivent à Québec. Thielcke est déjà reconnu pour ses talents d'artiste-peintre et Lindsay est greffier de la Chambre d'Assemblée du Bas-Canada. De plus, Thielcke a vécu à Édimbourg en Écosse avant d'émigrer au Canada. Enfin, les Lindsay sont des Écossais. Wiliam-Burns Lindsay a donc recours aux services de ce peintre qui était peut-être l'un de ses amis pour faire le portrait de sa femme et de son fils né deux ans auparavant.

Voici ce qu'écrivait l'historien Pierre-Georges Roy dans un article consacré à la famille Le Compte Dupré, au sujet de William-Burns Lindsay : (L'une des soeurs de William-Burns, SOPHIA LINDSAY avait épousé le 2 mai 1822 en la Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Québec, l'avocat Daniel Hippolyte Saint-Georges Dupré)

"William Burns Lindsay, qui continua la lignée était né à Québec le 11 juin 1796. Il devint officier de la Chambre en 1808, et succéda à son père comme greffier le 1er octobre 1829. Il garda cette charge jusqu'à sa mort arrivée à Québec le 15 mai 1862. Le "Journal de Québec" du lendemain disait : "Les devoirs de la position de greffier durent se ressentir des temps difficiles que le Canada traversa, depuis 1830 jusqu'à notre époque. Sir Georges-E. Cartier avait M. Lindsay en très haute estime. Il le visita plusieurs fois pendant sa dernière maladie et, lorsqu'il apprit sa mort, pendant une séance de la Chambre, il proposa l'ajournement par respect pour la mémoire de son respecté ami."

Il remplit pendant de longues années les fonctions de greffier de la Chambre des Communes. L'un de ses petis-fils est l'abbé Lionel Saint-Georges Lindsay qui devint plus tard monseigneur. Ordonné à Québec le 20 février 1875, il passa la première partie de sa vie de prêtre (18 ans) au Collège de Lévis comme professeur, directeur et préfet des études et le reste de sa vie à l'Archevêché de Québec où il décéda en 1921.

I am an indirect relative of the Maria Jones in Thielcke's painting and have been researching an unfortunate incident in the lives of two of her brothers - Isaac and James Jones - in Sorel in 1834. I have been placing some of the source material online at:

In an nutshell - Isaac and James Jones (ardent bureaucrats) were accused of the murder of Louis Marcoux (an ardent patriote). The tragedy was attributable to an altercation between patriotes and bureaucrats over the building of a chimney on a house owned by Laurent Dumas. Bureaucrat supporters (including les Jones) believed that a chimney was required so that Dumas could cast his vote for the Tories. Patriotes disagreed and one thing led to another...and the tragic result was Marcoux's death.

In addition to Maria (born 1801), Robert Jones and his wife Hannah Card (who died in 1834 - probably before Maria's wedding) had the following children: John, Isaac, James. Caroline (born 1799), Antoinette (born 1804), Henrietta (born 1796) and Robert (born in 1801 and died in infancy).

Groups of allegorical figures, probably fan designs. Possibly the same plates were published as 'Six Engravings by H. Thielcke, after the designs of her Royal Highness the Princess Elizabeth. With illustrations in verse' by R.. Ackermann in 1813. These are early proof states published by the engraver. All plates inscribed 'Pubd. Oct. 10. 1810. by H. Thielcke Queens House', and 'Proof' lower right. Two plates and dedication on J. Whatman paper watermarked 1810.

A portrait of a dignified lady.

"Painted by Henry Thiecke 1843" was written in pencil on the back paper at the time of re-lining. H.D. Thielcke (1788-1874) was a contemporary of Antoine Plamondon in Quebec City and was known as a portrait and miniature painter. In

1833 both artists had a studio at the Chateau Saint-Louis, the Governor's residence in Quebec. Thiecke later lived and painted in the US. Sight: 29.5" x 24.75". CODE-PFA
